CFP: “Representations of Disability in Literature and Culture”
Mizoram University (MZU)  •  25–26 May 2023

The Department of English and Culture Studies, Mizoram University, proposes to hold a two-day national seminar on “Representations of Disability in Literature and Culture” on 25th and 26th May 2023.

The seminar focuses on diverse representations of disability in literature, culture, society and politics. It aims to widen our understanding of what it means to function within the normal–abnormal binary, how notions of “normal” can be expanded, and why slogans like “better off dead than disabled” need to be critically re-examined.

The seminar seeks to engage with representations, methodologies and approaches to disability across: the arts, performance, law, academia, literature, media, and more, while also linking these to complex explorations of race, gender and class.

Suggested sub-themes include:
  • The Disabled Female Body
  • Disability and Sex
  • Disabled Childhoods
  • The Disabled Body as Social Outcast
  • Socio-economic Barriers of the Disabled
  • Queer Approaches to Disability
  • Domestic Violence and Disability
